Reginald "Hawk" Ennis was the only North Carolinian on the 1941 championship basketball team at North Carolina College. For three of his four seasons with the Eagles, he was captain of the basketball team, the team's most valuable player, and a member of the All-CIAA team. His jersey number 7 was retired.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 and in the Air Force from 1951-55. While he was teaching and coaching at Johnston Central High School, his high school alma mater, the school chose the Hawk as its mascot in his honor. He was a coach in schools in Johnston County, N.C. from 1946 to 1975, and served as assistant principal at Smithfield-Selma Senior High School.
