Alex M. Rivera Athletics Hall of Fame
John A. Barbee, Jr. was a four-year starter as a defensive tackle and on special teams under head coach George Quiett from 1969-72.
During his senior season in 1972, Barbee was at the center of the famed “Wrecking Crew” defense, finishing as the No. 1-ranked rushing defense in the NCAA College Division. He was voted First Team All-MEAC as the Eagles defeated North Carolina A&T to capture the 1972 MEAC Football Championship.
He signed with NCCU in February of 1969 as an All-County defensive tackle from North Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, N.C.
Barbee, recognized among 2002 Empire Who’s Who Empowering Executives & Professionals, is currently a Senior Vice President of Nutritional Sales in North America. He is active with Collins Grove United Methodist Church as head of the church council and a member of The United Methodist Men.
He is Vice-President of the Greensboro Alumni Chapter and a donor to NCCU’s $1,000 Eagles campaign.
