Alex M. Rivera Athletics Hall of Fame
Maurice Spencer was an All-MEAC safety in the 1972 and 1973 seasons, and was named to the Pittsburgh Courier All-American Team in 1973 as a defensive back. He is second in career interceptions in NCCU history, with 20 interceptions for 113 yards, and sixth in career punt return average with 37 returns for 474 yards.
He was the first defensive back chosen in the 1974 NFL draft, and played seven seasons for the New Orleans Saints. He is the only player known in the history of the game to suffer a broken neck, with a fusion at three levels, who rehabilitated to earn a starting cornerback position in the next season. He was twice team captain for the Saints, was the Saints’ 1976 defensive MVP and was named in 1976 as New Orleans Athlete of the Year. He is currently an associate producer for CBS Sports in New York.
