    Catherine Gamble Armwood, a native of Durham, NC, was the choice of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association for the 2003 Athletic Director’s Award.  Having served as Athletic Director at Durham High School and the Durham School of the Arts from 1980 until 2005, she has had a profound positive influence on many young athletes in the Durham area.  From 1971 until 2003, she also coached Tennis and Softball while serving as a teacher at Brogden Middle School, Durham High School, and the Durham School of the Arts.   In 1982-83, she was named the Big-Six Conference Softball Coach of the Year.  And in 1985, again she was named Softball Coach of the Year.

    While at NCCU, Catherine was a member of the Tennis Team and was selected as the 1968 Athlete of the Year for the Women’s Athletic Association’s Spring Sports Day.  During that same year, she was also named the Female Athlete of the Year with a citation for excellence in all-around performance.  In 1969, she received the Women’s Athletic Association’s Award for Outstanding all-around  performance for four years.  Among her many activities as an undergraduate, she assisted as a mentor in the physical education classes.  She received both the Bachelor of Science Degree in 1970 and the Master of Science Degree in Physical Education in 1985 from NCCU.
