A three-year AII-CIAA choice chosen to the Kodak All-America squad in his senior year in 1969, Doug Wilkerson was one of the nation's fastest linemen, clocked at 9.8 seconds in the 100-yard dash. He was a first round draft pick for the Houston Oilers in the professional draft in 1970. After one season with the Oilers, Wilkerson spent the next 14 seasons with the San Diego Chargers.

He was picked All-AFC in 1981 and 1982 (UPI), voted to the All-NFL Team in 1982 (AP, NEA, PFWA, Football Digest), and was selected to three consecutive NFL Pro Bowls (1981, 1982, 1983), including the last two as a starter.

Wilkerson was inducted into the San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame in 2000.

Wilkerson's NCCU football jersey number 63 was retired in 1970.
