DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University used a pair of walk-off hits in a doubleheader sweep (3-2, 8-7) of Navy in Saturday's opening day for both teams inside the Durham Athletic Park.
NCCU freshman
Corey Joyce hit a solo home run and a game-winning RBI double in the opener, then belted a two-run home run in the nightcap for a three-hit, four-RBI performance in his first day of college baseball.
Another NCCU freshman
Carter Williams, hit safely in his first three college at-bats and scored the game-winning run in game one.
Senior catcher
Conrad Kovalcik delivered the walk-off hit in game two, singling home
Dominic Cuevas with one out.
Junior
Justice Sampson picked up both wins for the Eagles, throwing 2.1 scoreless, no-hit innings in the doubleheader sweep.
NCCU and Navy, which won 43 games and advanced to the NCAA postseason in 2016, finish the weekend series on Sunday at 1 p.m. inside the Durham Athletic Park. Admission is free.
