Biography

Career through junior year: Selected in 12th round of 2019 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers. Two-time MEAC Player of the Year (2018, 2019).  2017 MEAC Rookie of the Year.  Three-time First Team All-MEAC Selection.  2017 Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American.  Three-time NCCSIA All-State (2017, 2018, 2019).  Has the highest career batting average (.348, 187-537) and slugging percentage (.527) in the modern era at NCCU.  Also has the third-highest career on base percentage in the modern era at NCCU at .439.  Has the most career runs scored with 125, fourth-most hits with 187, and is tied for the third-most doubles with 34.  Has the fifth-most triples in the modern era at NCCU with seven, and fourth most home runs with 16.  Has the second-most RBI with 112 and second-most total bases with 283.  Has drawn the third-most walks with 79 and the fourth-most stolen bases with 44.  Has the most defensive assists in the modern era at NCCU with 328 and the third-most double plays turned with 57.

2019: MEAC Player of the Year.  First Team All-MEAC.  First Team NCCSIA All-State. Started all 44 games he appeared in.  Led the Eagles in batting average at .343 with 58 hits.  Slugged a team-best .527 with eight doubles, four triples and five home runs to drive in 32 RBI.  Tied for fourth-most triples in a single season at NCCU in the modern era.  Scored a team-high 48 runs, the fourth most in a single-season at NCCU in the modern era.  Had a team-high .444 on base percentage with 27 walks.  Ranked top-50 in NCAA Division I in triples and in runs per game at 1.12.  Finished the season fourth in the MEAC in average and slugging percentage, and second in on base percentage.  Led the league in runs scored, and tied for fourth in triples and home runs.  Finished top-10 in the MEAC in total bases with 89.  Set a new NCCU modern era single-game record when he went 6-for-6 with a home run and four RBI at Bethune-Cookman on March 15.  Tied for the team lead with 19 multi-hit games, and tied for the second-most multi-RBI games with 10.  Preseason MEAC Player of the Year.

2018: Became first Eagle to be named MEAC Player of the Year.  Also named First Team All-MEAC and Second Team NCCSIA All-State.  Led the Eagles in average (.358), slugging (.542) and on base percentage (.456) and knocked a school-record 15 doubles.  Finished second in the MEAC in each of those categories.  Finished second in the MEAC and top-30 in the NCAA with 27 stolen bases, and tied for fourth-most in a season at NCCU.  Hit six home runs and drove in 37 RBI as well.  Had a team-best 10-game hit streak, and a 15-game streak of reaching base safely.  Had a team-best 23 multi-hit games with six three-hit games.  Also had 11 multi-RBI games.  Came a triple-shy of the cycle at Savannah State (April 28) as he went 3-for-5 with five RBI, a walk and a run scored.  Had his first career multi-homer game as he went deep twice in the season-opener against Wagner (Feb. 16).  Walked a team-most and MEAC third-most 32 times.  Named MEAC Player of the Week twice.  Named MEAC All-Academic.

2017:  Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American.  MEAC Rookie of the Year and First Team All-MEAC.  NCSSIA Second Team All-State.  Black College Nines Large School First Team selection and two-time MEAC Rookie of the Week.  Started all 46 games he appeared in, and finished top-10 in the MEAC in batting average (.344), third in slugging (.513), and fourth in RBI (43).  Was also top-10 in the league with 65 base hits.  Had a .417 on base percentage.  Notched a team-high 19 extra-base hits with 11 doubles, and a team-leading three triples and five home runs.  Had a season-high 11-game hit streak and a season-high streak of reaching base safely in 19 consecutive games.  Had a team-high 15 multi-RBI games, and was second on the team with 20 multi-hit games.  Had one of his best games of the season when he went 5-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored against Savannah State (March 25).  Drove in four RBI on two hits with a run scored against Presbyterian (April 4).

Personal: Born Aug. 19. 1998 in Lexington, N.C.  Parents are Steve Joyce and Shannon McHone.  Enjoys go kart racing.  Majoring in business administration at NCCU.
