Game Recap: Baseball |

Williams Breaks Hit Record as NCCU Eagle-Nine Splits with FAMU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – North Carolina Central University freshman Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) picked up four hits during the doubleheader to run his season total to 68 hits to break the single season record as the Eagles split the pair with Florida A&M, 4-5 and 5-1 on Saturday, May 6 at Moore-Kittles Field.

Williams passed teammate Ellington Hopkins (Lansing, N.Y.) who set the record at 66 last season.

GAME ONE:
NCCU (21-27, 11-11 MEAC) took the lead in the top of the first as Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) scored on a wild pitch, and that gave Devin Sweet (Greensboro, N.C.) a springboard to set down the first six batters in order from FAMU (24-22, 12-8 MEAC).

The Rattlers rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs without a hit, taking advantage of walks and a wild pitch to drive in the first.  Dallas Oliver (Chipley, Fla.) drove in the second on a sacrifice fly to give the hosts the lead.

The Eagles came back to get back in front with runs in the fifth and sixth inning, with RBI singles from Ellington Hopkins (Lansing, N.Y.) and Williams, and NCCU held 3-2 advantage until the eighth.

FAMU again rallied for two runs, with back-to-back RBI singles from Kaycee Reese (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Russell Rauh (Tallahassee, Fla.) to take a 4-3 lead going to the final frame.

NCCU held firm and after Williams ripped a leadoff single, the Eagles worked three-straight two-out walks to drive him in to tie the game.

Oliver was called into the bullpen to pitch the top of the 10th for FAMU, and he held NCCU scoreless and picked up the winning hit on a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the inning to give game one to the Rattlers.

GAME TWO:
Game two began as a bit of a pitcher's duel, but the Eagles broke it open in the top of the fourth with four runs to take the lead.

The Eagles got the first two runs in on an RBI single from Holland and a sacrifice fly from Michalski, and the next two on a double from Conrad Kovalcik (Detroit, Mich.) deep to the gap in right field.  NCCU added one more run on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth.

Jonathan Figueroa (Chicago, Ill.) turned in a strong start for the Eagles, by striking out five with just one earned run, and he faced the minimum through the first three innings.  During that early stretch he also set down 10 batters in a row.

Game three of the weekend series will be on Sunday, May 7 at 1:00 p.m. at Moore-Kittles Field.
