DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University baseball program kept its weekend momentum rolling, and wrapped up the 2021 regular season with a 6-1 victory to sweep Florida A&M and leave the Durham Athletic Park with a five-game winning streak on home turf on Saturday, May 15.
Prior to the game, NCCU (25-18, 17-11 MEAC) honored 13 seniors, and recognized all student-athletes on the roster at the conclusion of the contest.
Shawn Runey (Daniel Island, S.C.) got the start on his senior day, and he delivered five innings of shutout ball with four strikeouts, and he earned the win for his efforts.
Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna, Calif.) cracked a leadoff homer in the bottom of the third to give the Eagles the lead, and then pushed in another run on an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to put the Eagles ahead, 2-0.
Figueiredo had both the first three hits and three RBI for NCCU in the contest in the first six innings, and the rest of the Eagles chimed in with three runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBIs from
Luis DeLeon (Providence, R.I.),
Jacob Raby (Granite Falls, N.C.), and
Kobe Phillips (Charlotte, N.C.).
FAMU (21-32, 15-13 MEAC) got its lone run of the game on a solo home run from LJ Bryant (Leesburg, Ga.) in the top of the sixth.
Scott Meylan (Pittsburg, Calif.) was called in for the final out, and he struck out the only batter he faced to send the Eagles off as winners in their final home game at the Durham Athletic Park.
Figueiredo finished the game with three hits and three RBI from the leadoff spot to energize the squad in the victory.
With the win, the Eagles are now tied for the third-most wins in a single season with 25, and set a new modern era regular season win percentage record at .581.
The Eagles will next travel to Norfolk, Virginia for the MEAC Baseball Championship, and that will begin on Thursday, May 20. NCCU will face Delaware State, who is the number two seed from the Northern Division, at noon to open the tournament.
