GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina Central University and North Carolina A&T needed extra innings to bring the series to a conclusion, and it was the Aggies who were able to finish ahead and take the doubleheader, 8-2 and 3-2, to split the weekend series with the Eagles on Sunday, March 21 at War Memorial Stadium.
GAME ONE: NCAT (7-13, 2-2 MEAC) built up a 4-0 lead in the first four innings over NCCU (10-8, 2-2 MEAC), however only two of those runs were earned as the Aggies took advantage of defensive errors. NCAT scored four more in the fifth and sixth, and Dustin Baber (Babson Park, Fla.) was responsible for three RBI on a double and a single.
Chet Sikes (Trinity, N.C.) and
Patrick Doran (Evergreen Park, Ill.) drove in the two runs for the Eagles during the game, and Sikes picked up his fifth multi-hit game of the year as he also hit his team-leading fifth double of the season in the top of the third.
GAME TWO: NCCU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning by way of bases-loaded walks by
Nick Fajardo (Durham, N.C.) and
Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna, Calif.), but the Aggies responded immediately to level the game at 2-2 on a single and sacrifice fly, and the game would remain locked there for the next seven innings.
Both sides were able to push go-ahead runners into scoring position as the game wore on into the evening hours, but the Aggies were able to beat a throw home from left field on a walk-off single by Justin Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) in the bottom of the ninth allowed the hosts to take a 3-2 win.
Evan Gates (Roseville, Mich.) was a big factor in the win for NCAT as he struck out 11 in 5.2 innings of relief from the bullpen.
NCCU will finish up its seven-game road swing with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 27 at Richmond, and will return home to finish the series with the Spiders with a single game on Sunday, March 28 at the Durham Athletic Park.
