DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University's baseball program and Duke combined for 19 runs in the second meeting of the series, but the Blue Devils came away with a 12-7 win on Tuesday, April 6 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Duke (12-13) brought in a run in both the first and second innings on an RBI single from Erikson Nichols (Oradell, N.J.) in the first, and an RBI double from RJ Schreck (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the second to take a 2-0 lead, but NCCU (10-9) quickly responded in the top of the third when
Jacob Raby (Granite Falls, N.C.) touched home after a wild pitch to move the score to 2-1.
The biggest blow of the game came in the bottom of the fourth when the Blue Devils plated seven runs on five hits to take a 9-1 lead. Duke had three RBI doubles in the frame, and Chase Cheek (Orlando, Fla.) supplied a two-RBI single.
Cameron Norgren (Cary, N.C.) crushed his second home run of the year in the top of the fifth, and that gave the Eagles some momentum as they went on to bat around and score four in the top of the sixth to bring the Eagles within three at 10-7. Norgren delivered another RBI hit during the four-run frame for the maroon and gray, and he finished the game with two hits and two RBI.
Duke regained its advantage with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Eagles still had the energy to mount a late charge in the ninth.
Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna, Calif.) drove in a run, and the Eagles nearly were able to put together a rally to bring the game level, but the Blue Devils were able to stand strong for the win.
Norgren led the Eagles at the plate with his two hits, and Schreck, Nichols, and Ethan Murray (Crozet, Va.) each had two hits for Duke. Cheek drove in three RBI for the Blue Devils, and Schreck had three walks.
Of note, 19 combined runs is tied for the third-most in a game during this series.
The Eagles will return to MEAC Southern Division play this weekend with a four-game series with North Carolina A&T that will begin on Friday, April 9 at 4:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park.
