Eagles Blast Their Way to Doubleheader Split with Norfolk State

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University's baseball starting pitchers showed their toughness on the mound in both games against Norfolk State, but it was the bats that helped the Eagles split the doubleheader with the Spartans on Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Durham Athletic Park as the Spartans took game one, 8-5, and the Eagles grabbed game two, 7-0.

GAME ONE: Austin Vernon (Raleigh, N.C.) took the mound in game one and was highly efficient for NCCU (4-2) as he struck out seven NSU (1-5) batters in the first three innings.  The Eagles took a 4-1 lead with help from a two-RBI single from Cameron Norgren (Cary, N.C.) in the bottom of the first, and a sacrifice fly from Cort Maynard (Charlotte, N.C.).

The Spartans swung the game in their favor by scoring four unanswered runs, and they capped the run with a three-run home run by Mason Velasquez (Fairfax, Va.) in the top of the ninth to take an 8-4 lead.  The Eagles rallied to get the tying run on deck in the bottom of the frame, but the game ended in a wild sequence of events that resulted with a runner tagged out at second after an RBI single by Chet Sikes (Trinity, N.C.) to end the first game, 8-5.

GAME TWO: The Eagles mashed three home runs for the first time since March 6, 2019 against NC State in the second game of the twinbill, and that started in the bottom of the first with a three-run cannonball from Norgren.  The Eagles came a grand slam shy of the team home run cycle as Maynard came through with a solo blast in the third, and Justin Bowers (Yorktown, Va.) delivered a two-run shot in the fourth to send the hosts ahead, 6-0.  The lone run not scored by a longball for the Eagles in the second game was on a sacrifice fly from Norgren in the fifth to wrap up the scoring at 7-0.  Norgren finished the doubleheader by going 3-for-5 and had six runs batted in with an astronomical 1.200 slugging percentage.

Ryan Miller (Blandon, Pa.) spun a gem as he went the distance with a seven-inning shutout, and struck out 10 with just two walks and four hits allowed for his second win of the year.

The Eagles and Spartans will finish the series on Sunday, Feb. 28 at Marty Miller Field in Norfolk, Virginia at 1:00 p.m.
