NCCU Eagle-Nine Bested by Power Hitting NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina Central University battled NCAA Tournament participant North Carolina State at Doak Field, and the Wolfpack came away with a 13-0 win on Wednesday, April 25.

NCCU (17-25) started the game hot by having the first three batters reach, and ended up having two runners aboard with just one out to start the game.  But, the NC State (21-20) bullpen arms kept the Eagles locked down by just allowing three hits through the first seven innings of the game.

The Wolfpack put the first big number on the board in the second inning by scoring five runs with help from a bases-clearing two-run triple by Brad Debo (Durham, N.C.).  The biggest inning for NC State was the bottom of the fourth, where the hosts hit three home runs within four at bats.

Josh McLain (Hiddenite, N.C.) started with a solo home run to left, and then Joe Dunand (Miami, Fla.) hit the first of his two two-run homers two batters later, also to left field.  Brett Kinneman (York, Pa.) then turned one around to right field to go back-to-back with Dunand.

For NCCU a handful of batters reached twice, led by Ellington Hopkins (Lansing, N.Y.) who walked twice.  Andrew Valichka (Pedricktown, N.J.) doubled and had a walk, and Dominic Cuevas singled and walked as well.

Also of note, both Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) and Joyce picked up hits, as they continue to chase the single season hit record total of 66.  Williams is up to 59 total hits, and Joyce has now reached 56.

The Eagles return to the Durham Athletic Park to face Norfolk State on Wednesday, April 26 with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.  Admission is free.
