NCCU Eagle-Nine Sweeps Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – North Carolina Central University tallied double-digit runs for the second game in a row as the Eagles completed the weekend sweep over Savannah State, 10-5 at Tiger Field on Sunday, March 26.

NCCU (13-11, 5-4 MEAC) scored all 10 of its runs in the first two frames to build up the cushion it needed for the victory.  Over the two innings the Eagles sent 18 batters to the dish and batted around in the second inning.

SSU (9-15, 0-6 MEAC) attempted to stage a rally in the middle frames with four total runs scored in the fourth and fifth innings.  The Tigers had an opportunity to score more, however the Eagles forced the Tigers to leave the bases loaded on two occasions.

Evan Holland (Erial, N.J.) had a strong outing for the Eagles as he went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, an RBI and two runs scored.  Zach Michalski (Belews Creek, N.C.) had a three-hit day in five at bats with an RBI, and both Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) and Mitch McCrary (Mills Creek, N.C.) had a pair of hits apiece.

As a team the Eagles drew eight walks and the pitching staff fanned 12 Tigers, with eight coming from starter Jonathan Figueroa (Chicago, Ill.).

NCCU will be at home for all of the upcoming week, starting with a pair of midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday at the DAP against Longwood and High Point.  Both games are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., and admission is free.
