DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University rallied to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Longwood forced a game-ending double play to snap the Eagles' four-game win streak 5-3 on Tuesday, March 28 at the Durham Athletic Park.
Longwood (10-15) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as the first four batters reached base, started by three consecutive hits. NCCU (13-12) was able to work the game level with two runs in the bottom of the first and the third.
Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) got the Eagles going by knocking a double on the very first pitch thrown in the bottom of the first before being brought home by
Conrad Kovalcik (Detroit, Mich.). Kovalcik also struck the tying blow on a single in the third, driving in Williams again.
Longwood pulled back in front in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout, but the Eagles were able to battle to get the game tied again in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from
Dominic Cuevas (Gurnee, Ill.) to move the score to 3-3.
The Lancers went back into the lead for good in the top of the eighth on a pair of RBI singles from Nate Blakeney (Archdale, N.C.) and Joey Mendez (Leesburg, Va.).
The Eagles supplied some drama in the bottom of the ninth as the Eagles loaded the bases with just one out, but the Lancers forced a double play to finish the game.
Williams led the Eagles by going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, and Kovalcik was responsible for two of the Eagles' three RBI.
NCCU will look to restart its win streak on Wednesday, March 29 against High Point with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the DAP. Admission is free.
