DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University out-hit High Point 12 to nine, but the Panthers outscored the Eagles 10-6 on Wednesday, March 29 at the Durham Athletic Park.
HPU (11-13) opened up its lead in the second inning by scoring five runs on just one hit. The Panthers went on to secure the lead with an additional three runs in the top of the third for an 8-0 lead, with a two run home run coming from Hunter Lee (Matiland, Fla.) who ended the day 3-for-4 with three RBI, and a triple-shy of the cycle.
NCCU (13-13) got on the board in the third inning with a pair of RBI from
Zach Michalski (Belews Creek, N.C.) and
Jake Raby (Granite Falls, N.C.). Raby picked up two hits and two RBI with a solo home run in the top of the seventh as well.
The Eagles kept chipping away at the deficit over the course of the game with the smash from Raby in the seventh, and two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a double from
Andrew Valichka (Pedricktown, N.J.) to pull the Eagles within four, but those would be the last runs scored in the game.
Valichka picked up two hits and two RBI, and
Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) had his second consecutive three-hit game with two doubles.
Timmy Fischvogt (Kernersville, N.C.) notched his first career hits by going 2-for-5, with his first knock coming on a single in the fifth.
The Eagles return to MEAC Southern Division play next against Florida A&M with the weekend series beginning on Saturday, April 1 with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the DAP. Admission is free.
