NCCU Eagle-Nine Topped in Series Finale with UNCW

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University had the tables turned against them as UNC Wilmington struck for a large lead early on the way to a 16-8 win for the Seahawks on Sunday, April 9 at the Durham Athletic Park.

NCCU (16-17) took the lead first with two runs in the bottom of the first, brought in by Evan Holland (Erial, N.J.) after getting hit by a pitch and a sacrifice fly from Zach Michalski (Belews Creek, N.C.).  The Eagles held the lead for the first two innings before UNCW (13-17) sprinted ahead in the third.

The Seahawks batted around to score five in the top of the third, and then scored two more in the fourth, sparked by a home run from Brian Mims (Montclair, Va.) to take a 7-2 lead.  UNCW scored continued to score another five unanswered runs with another solo homer hit by Riley Zayicek (Mooresville, N.C.) in the sixth frame.

The Eagles brought back a run in the bottom of the eighth from Bryant Battle (Greenville, N.C.) before UNCW scored another four runs in the top of the ninth.

NCCU put up a large number of its own in the bottom of the ninth by scoring five runs on five hits.  The Eagles strung together three hits to score the first two runs, started by a double from Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.).  Joyce was driven in on a single from Holland who went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored with a double in the finale.

Tony Mejias (Miami, Fla.) notched his first career RBI on a double to the gap, before fellow freshman Timmy Fischvogt (Kernersville, N.C.) lifted a 2-RBI double to the right field alley.  Battle finished the scoring with a double, as the Eagles sent eight men to the plate in the inning.

NCCU collected 11 hits to mark its 21st game with a double-digit hit total.

The Eagles go back on the road to visit Longwood on Tuesday, April 11 with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
