NCCU Eagle-Nine Rally Falls Short at Longwood

FARMVILLE,Va. – North Carolina Central University once again was able to put the tying run on base in the ninth inning, but Longwood held firm for a 3-2 win at Bolding Stadium on Tuesday, April 11.

The first few innings were quiet on both sides of the field, before Brandon Harvell (Yorktown, Va.) put Longwood (11-20) ahead in the bottom of the third.  NCCU (16-18) immediately put itself in front after Evan Holland (Erial, N.J.) led off the frame with a solo blast, his fourth of the year.

Andrew Valichka (Pedricktown, N.J.) gave the Eagles the lead on a sacrifice fly to drive in Conrad Kovalcik (Detroit, Mich.) and give NCCU a 2-1 lead.

NCCU held the lead through the middle frames until the sixth inning when a two-out two-RBI single from Nate Blakeney (Archdale, N.C.) put the Lancers back in front, 3-2.

The Eagles had a pair of opportunities to tie the game in the late stages, by putting runners on the corners in the eighth, and then they lead off the ninth with a double from Tony Mejias (Miami, Fla.).  Devin Gould (Fairfax Station, Va.) was called in from the bullpen for the ninth, and he recorded three strikeouts for his first save of the season.

Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) didn't pick up a hit in the game, but he did run his streak of reaching base to 15 consecutive games by getting aboard twice.

The Eagles return to MEAC Southern Division play this weekend with a three-game set with rival North Carolina A&T in Greensboro beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, April 14 at 1:00 p.m.
