NCCU Eagle-Nine Powers Up to Split Doubleheader with Bethune-Cookman

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University launched three home runs on the day in a doubleheader split with Bethune-Cookman as the Eagles won game one, 10-2, and the Wildcats took the second game, 6-0 on Saturday, April 22 at the Durham Athletic Park.

GAME ONE:
NCCU (17-24, 8-9 MEAC) started the day with a bang as the Eagles smacked two homers in the bottom of the first.  Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) started the party by swatting the first pitch he saw off of the warehouse in right field for his first career home run, and then Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) got in on the act with an inside-the-park home run hit off the centerfield wall to put the Eagles ahead 2-0.

Devin Sweet (Greensboro, N.C.) kept B-CU (23-19, 10-7 MEAC) in check by fanning six batters with just two earned runs over 7.2 innings of work.

The game reached a critical point in the top of the eighth inning as the Wildcats tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the frame, but Tony Mejias (Miami, Fla.) immediately broke the deadlock with his first career home run to lead off the bottom of the frame.

That was the spark for the Eagles as they went on to score eight runs on six hits, sending 12 batters to the plate.  Mejias went on to collect another RBI hit in the same frame, and Jake Raby (Granite Falls, N.C.) also had a big hit with a bases-clearing 3-RBI double to right center.

GAME TWO:
The second game was interrupted in the bottom of the third inning after the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead with a 53-minute weather delay due to lightning and rain.  The rain didn't slow down B-CU, however as it broke the game open in the top of the sixth with three runs, and then added another two on a home run from Kyle Corbin (Orlando, Fla.) in the top of the seventh.

Tyler Norris (Coral Springs, Fla.) earned his fifth win of the year by holding the Eagles to three hits over 5.1 innings with five strikeouts.

Game three of the weekend series scheduled for Sunday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m. has been canceled due to weather, and a makeup date has not yet been announced.
