Box Score 2 ASHEVILLE, N.C. – North Carolina Central University head baseball coach
Jim Koerner notched his 100th career coaching victory with the maroon and gray as the Eagles split a doubleheader with UNC Asheville on Saturday, April 9 at Greenwood Baseball Stadium.
Asheville (9-23) took the first game by a score of 6-5 in extra innings, and NCCU (16-18) won the second 5-2.
Koerner began his tenure at NCCU in the 2012 season, and saw his first victory on Feb. 25 of that season as the Eagles defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology 8-5 in Durham.
NCCU lit up the scoreboard first for the afternoon after
Christian Triplett (Wilkesboro, N.C.) boosted his fifth home run of the year to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the third inning. NCCU added another run in the top of the fourth and it was able to carry a 2-0 advantage to the sixth inning of seven.
Asheville rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back two-RBI hits from Pete Guy (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Dan Wilson (Hampstead, N.C.) , and held a three-run lead with the Eagles down to their final three outs.
The Eagles were able to turn it around with their backs against the wall as
James Dey (Charlotte, N.C.) ripped a tying two-RBI single to centerfield to push the contest to extra innings.
It only took one extra frame for the game to be decided as Lucas Owens (Forest City, N.C.) supplied a pinch-hit walkoff RBI in the bottom of the eighth to give the home team a win in the opener.
Game two went in the opposite direction of the first as Asheville was the team with the lead going into the late stages after another back-to-back pair of RBI hits from Scott Kobos (Charlotte, N.C.) and Andrew Friedholm (Greer, S.C.) in the fifth inning erasing
Zachary Marszal's RBI single in the previous frame.
NCCU collected three runs in the top of the sixth, buoyed by a two-RBI fielder's choice from
Jacobi Harris (Pittsboro, N.C.) and then
Trevor Theissen (Franklin, Wisc.) added an insurance run on a solo jaunt in the seventh to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead in the last inning.
Asheville was able to load the bases with just one out, but
Jamar Hinton (Petersburg, Va.) coaxed a game-ending double play for his second save of the season.
The Eagles will look for the series win on Sunday afternoon, April 10 at 1:00 p.m. and the game will be carried live on the Big South Network. Live Twitter updates will also be available by following the official account of NCCU Athletics, @NCCUAthletics.
