DOVER, Del. – North Carolina Central University sophomore
Ryan Miller (Blandon, Pa.) threw six strikeouts in eight innings of shutout ball, and
Caleb McRoy (Raleigh, N.C.) tallied the final three outs as the duo combined to throw the Eagles' first nine-inning shutout since 2017 in a 6-0 victory over Delaware State to split the weekend series on Sunday, April 18 at Soldier Field.
The last NCCU (14-13, 6-6 MEAC) nine-inning shutout came from the hands of Devin Sweet, Jake McCort, and
Ryan Decker on April 1, 2017 in an 8-0 win over Florida A&M.
Chet Sikes (Trinity, N.C.) put NCCU on the board in the top of the third on a two-RBI single, and then added a third RBI on a single in the top of the seventh. The Eagles scored a total of four runs in the seventh frame on three hits and one error, including an RBI single by
Luis DeLeon (Providence, R.I.), and a sacrifice fly by
Cameron Norgren (Cary, N.C.). The fourth run of the inning was scored by DeLeon as he slid home on a double steal with
Jacob Raby (Granite Falls, N.C.).
DSU (11-14, 9-6 MEAC) were able to put together six hits in the contest, led by Robert Trujillo (Miami, Fla.) who went 2-for-2.
Of note, head coach
Jim Koerner celebrated his 200th victory with the Eagles since joining the program in 2012.
The Eagles will remain on the road to visit Florida A&M for a four-game series that will begin on Friday, April 23 in Tallahassee, Florida.
