Eagle-Nine Sweeps NJIT for Fifth-Straight Win

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University scored early and often as the Eagles completed the weekend sweep of NJIT with a 10-1 victory, led by a game-high six RBI from Mitch McCrary (Mills Creek, N.C.) on Sunday, March 5 at the Durham Athletic Park.

Six RBI for McCrary is tied for the fourth-most in a single game in the modern era at NCCU.

NCCU (6-4) leapt ahead in the bottom of the first as Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) opened the frame with a double before scoring on a fielding error in a later at bat.  McCrary got his first two RBI of the game later in the inning on a double down the left field line giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead over NJIT (2-7).

The Eagles added another run in the next frame as Evan Holland (Erial, N.J.) led off with a homer over the left field wall.  Williams touched home for a second time in the bottom of the fourth as he laced a triple deep to right center, and came around on a wild pitch in the next at bat to put the Eagles ahead 5-0.

While the Eagles had no issues putting the bat on the ball, the NCCU pitching staff held NJIT without a hit until the fourth inning, and without a run until the sixth when Justin Etts (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) hit a home run to left.

NCCU responded by sending nine batters to the plate for the third time this season, and scored five runs on five hits to break the game open to the final score of 10-1.  The big blast in the frame came from McCrary who crushed a grand slam over the warehouses in right field for his sixth RBI of the day.

Williams finished the day a home run shy of the cycle, as he went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, and Ellington Hopkins (Lansing, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored.

The Eagles' five-game win streak is the longest they've had since the 2015 season, and they'll put it on the line on Tuesday, March 7 at Presbyterian.
