NCCU VOLLEYBALL SEIZES FIVE-SET VICTORY OVER BETHUNE-COOKMAN

Four Eagles Finish with Double-Doubles during 3-2 Victory

Box Score DURHAM, N.C.  – Four Eagles finished with double-doubles while the North Carolina Central University volleyball team snapped its two-match losing streak with a five set (21-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-23,19-17) win over the Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats on Friday, Nov. 1 in Durham, N.C.

Senior Kalin Russell led the way offensively for the Eagles finishing with a season-high 18 kills, 10 digs, six blocks and one service ace. Also earning a kill/dig double-double was junior Da'sha Brown who earned 10 kills and 14 digs while seizing an additional two service aces.

The setting duo of sophomore Melissa Rabell Pineiro and junior Alice Genna also added double-doubles for the Eagles. Rabell Pineiro led the way with 19 digs, while also dishing 14 assists and Genna collected a team-high 26 helpers and 10 digs.

Also contributing to the Eagles offense was junior Ashley McCarthy who grasped a team second-best 13 kills while also adding six digs and four blocks and rookie Kelsey Murphy finished with double-digit digs, contributing 10, with eight kills and one block.

In the five-set victory, NCCU turned 167 attempts into 59 kills on 28 errors, served four service aces, dug 77 Wildcat attempts and collected twelve team blocks.

B-CU took the first two sets of play with confidence, with NCCU only seeing the lead at 1-0 during both games.

Following the 10-minute intermission, the Eagles came back to the court determined go out with a fight.  NCCU battled back-and-forth during the third set which saw eight ties and six lead changes before a kill from McCarthy sealed the 25-23 victory.

The Eagles captured a set four victory in convincing fashion as the Wildcats saw their only lead at 1-0. A kill from Russell gave NCCU the 25-23 victory, pushing a fifth and deciding match.  

The Eagles sealed the night off of another McCarthy kill with a fifth-set 19-17 victory.  NCCU took advantage of four B-CU service errors, along with four hitting errors in game five.

The Wildcats were led by Delicia Pierre who collected a game-high 21 kills, 15 digs and two blocks, Alexas Thomas who dished 45 assists, and Jennifer Jimenez who collected 19 digs.

Bethune-Cookman earned 59 kills on 177 attempts with 24 errors, seized 51 assists, 73 digs, nine service aces, and seven team blocks.

The Eagles advance to 3-22 overall and 3-4 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play while the Wildcats drop to 5-23 and 4-3 in league action.

NCCU concludes the regular-season home slate on Sunday, Nov. 3 as the Eagles take on the Rattlers of Florida A&M University at 2 p.m. inside McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium on Senior Day.
