GLENSIDE, Pa. – Freshman Iszac Bertagnole shot under par for the tournament to earn another top-5 individual finish and pace the North Carolina Central University men's golf team to a fifth-place team finish at the Wildcat Spring Invitational hosted by Villanova University at LuLu Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
 
Bertagnole registered his third top-5 finish out of six spring tournaments with a one-under par total of 212 on the 6,542-yard, par-71 LuLu layout, which was just two shots off NCCU's 54-hole individual record. He circled 12 total birdies over his 54 holes of play while turning in scorecards of 69, 76 and 67. The rookie has shot in the 70s or below in all 18 spring rounds this season, including three rounds in the 60s.
 
The Eagles celebrated Senior Day for Alex Burnett on the last day of the tournament. Burnett, who is a four-year letter winner for NCCU, produced a career-best 78 in his last round as one of three maroon and gray individuals in the field.
 
Sophomore Kyle Gregory (71, 75, 74) and freshman Jamal Hutchison (70, 71, 80) also tallied top-20 finishes for the Eagles out of 54 golfers while senior Kendall Wallace (71-76, 76) finished in the middle of the pack.
 
The Eagles were sitting in second place after an opening round team score of three-under par 281, which tied for the NCCU single-round program team record first set in the third round of the 2022 SAS Championship HBCU Invitational.
 
NCCU's strong play in that first round featured Gregory matching his low collegiate round (71), Wallace matching his best signed scorecard of his season (71), and Hutchison tallying his sixth round under par in his first collegiate campaign (70).
 
However, the Eagles settled for fifth place with scores of 298 and 297 over the final two rounds, finishing with wins over Binghamton University and University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Villanova won the team title for a second straight season and had the top two individual finishers.
 
NC Central will next play in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Men's Golf Championship at Callaway Resort & Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia, on Friday-Sunday, April 26-28
