NCCU’s Joao and Hidalgo Vega Earn MEAC Weekly Honors

Eagles sweep MEAC Weekly Awards for 2nd time

NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University sophomore Lafi Joao was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Week and freshman Alejandra Hidalgo Vega was tabbed MEAC Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Monday morning.

Joao has won four of her last five singles matches, including having the victory clinching win multiple times. The Gaithersburg, Maryland native began a four-match win streak by defeating Nyanquie Tomegah of Queens University of Charlotte 6-2, 6-1.

Joao then beat Lucia Fernandez of Hampton, (7-5, 6-3), Mariia Triska of Eastern Kentucky (6-1, 6-4), and Asima Sazan of North Carolina A&T (6-4, 6-4).

Hidalgo Vega is currently sporting a five-match win streak that started at the beginning of the month. The Madrid, Spain native started her hot streak with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hampton's Sofia Sokolova.

Hidalgo Vega followed that performance with four three set hard fought victories. First she clipped Elena Tairian of Eastern Kentucky (1-6, 6-0, 10-7), then outlasted NC A&T's Cielo Tapia-Cruz (4-6, 7-5, 6-3), then beat UNC Asheville's Ami Grace Dougah (6-4, 1-6, 10-7), and then defeated Lily Woods of Wofford College (6-3, 6-7, 6-2).

Up next NCCU (4-7) will host the MEAC Round-Up Tournament at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The action begins on Thursday, March 16 and runs through Saturday, March 18.

The Eagles will battle Delaware State on Thursday at noon, Howard, and Coppin State on Friday at 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., respectively, and Morgan State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
