SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The North Carolina Central women's tennis team wrapped up the fall season on the West Coast, competing in two different tournaments in San Diego, Calif. Mariana Zottoli highlighted the trip, reaching the finals of her draw in singles.
Valeria San Miguel Soria and Sara Barbaric represented the MEAC as doubles partners at the ITA Conference Masters at Barnes Tennis Center on Nov. 6-9. The rest of the Eagles battled in the San Diego State Fall Classic at the Aztec Tennis Center on Nov. 7-9.
At the ITA Conference Masters, San Miguel Soria and Barbaric debuted in the round of 32 against Francesca Mattioli and Maeve Thornton of Tennessee. The Vols defeated the Eagles in straight sets. Moving to the consolation round, the duo faced Stefaniya Anikina and Margaux Guibal Britt of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, falling in two 6-4 sets.
Fifteen minutes away, the remaining Eagles saw singles and doubles action at the SDSU Classic. Zottoli highlighted the singles tournament for NCCU with victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals. She defeated Liisa Varul of the host school, San Diego State, followed by a 7-5, 6-1 win over Colorado State's Dylan Voeks. Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and Journee Henderson also triumphed in singles at SDSU.
NC Central now shifts focus to preparing for the spring after a successful fall season.
