PREVIEW: NCCU at 2023 MEAC Volleyball Championship


DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team will enter the 2023 MEAC Volleyball Championship hosted by Delaware State University as the sixth seed and the Eagles will begin play against third-seeded host Hornets in the quarterfinals on Friday.
 
DSU will once again be hosting the three-day postseason tournament inside Memorial Hall Gym (Dover, Del.) from Friday-Sunday, Nov. 17-19. The winner of Friday's NCCU/DSU match will play in the semifinals against the winner of the No. 2 Howard versus No. 7 Morgan State match on Saturday. The championship match against the winner other half of the bracket is slated for Sunday. If the Eagles advance each round, all three of NCCU's potential match times will be 8:30 p.m.

The Eagles picked up a 3-1 win against South Carolina State University in their last regular season match on Friday. NC Central (6-17 Overall, 5-9 MEAC) and DSU are playing in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Volleyball Championship for a second straight season as the same seeds. The Hornets defeated the Eagles 3-0 on the way to winning the tournament title.
 
Sophomore outside hitter Emmie Modlin and junior libero Loren Johnson were both named All-MEAC Second Team after leading NCCU at their respective positions (READ MORE). Junior setter Bella Dearinger was a three-time MEAC Setter of the Week honoree this season, including last week.
 
NCCU will try and upset Delaware State after losing both of its regular season matches against the Hornets. DSU swept the Eagles at home, but NC Central took the Hornets to five sets in Durham.
 
DSU BENCH

The defending champion Hornets won their last four regular season matches to move up to third place in the league standings. Delaware State (16-12, 9-5) is 7-3 at home.
 
A trio of Hornets earned MEAC postseason awards. Senior outside hitter Alondra Maldonado and junior middle blocker Kelsie Dawson were both selected to the First Team while freshman outside hitter Ella Sanders secured Second Team and All-Rookie recognition.
