NCCU’s Modlin and Johnson Named Second Team All-MEAC


NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University sophomore outside hitter Emmie Modlin and junior libero Loren Johnson were both named to the 2023 All-MEAC Second Team as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference announced its volleyball postseason awards on Thursday leading into the 2023 MEAC Volleyball Championship that is scheduled for Friday-Sunday, Nov. 17-19
 
Modlin picked up her first postseason award after ranking as NCCU's top hitter. She started all 23 regular season matches for the Eagles and finished with an average of 3.09 kills per set while sporting a .229 hitting percentage.
 
Against league opposition, Modlin racked up an average of 3.71 points per set.
 
Modlin reached double-digit kills in 15 matches to rank fourth in the MEAC in kills per set while her hitting percentage led NCCU's starters. She enters postseason play having reached double figures in the kills column in six consecutive matches, including a season-high 22 kills in a five-set match against the defending champions Delaware State University.
 
Modlin, who resides from Pinehurst, North Carolina, earned MEAC Player of the Week laurels twice in her second season at NCCU (Oct. 30, Nov. 6).
 
Johnson has been one of the top ranked libero's in the MEAC in her first two seasons at NCCU. Johnson averaged 3.87 digs per set in the regular season, ranking third in the conference. She also paced the Eagles with 0.35 aces per set, which sits sixth best in the league.
 
As the starting libero in all 23 of NCCU's matches, Johnson reached double-digit digs in 19 of those contests, including a season-high 30 digs in a five-set match against regular season champion Coppin State University. She also served up six aces in a pair of league tilts this season.
 
Johnson, who hails from Charlotte, North Carolina, was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week twice this campaign (Oct. 3, Oct. 30) as she increased her averages to 3.95 digs and 0.45 aces per set against conference competition.
 
NC Central will open up the 2023 MEAC Volleyball Championship hosted by Delaware State University with a quarterfinals showdown against the host Hornets on Friday at 8:30 p.m.
