DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman
Kennedy Hill was the only North Carolina Central University player to win a set on Sunday in a 4-0 non-conference women's tennis home loss to Western Carolina University.
The dual ended once the Catamounts clinched the team victory, resulting in two unfinished singles matches and the last singles match never even starting with just four courts at the NCCU Tennis Courts. on NCCU's four courts on campus.
Western Carolina won its third straight match to improve to 8-3 on the season.
The Catamounts only needed two singles wins to finish off the triumph on a windy day. Freshman No. 3 Luzia Obermeier was the first to win with a 6-0, 6-4 win over sophomore
Maria Picazo. Sophomore Kata Foldeak ended the match by holding off sophomore
Jade Houston by a 7-5, 6-2 margin on court one.
Hill secured her set victory in the second slot in NCCU's lineup. After dropping the first set 6-0, Hill rallied with a 6-4 win over freshman Lizia Obermeier. However, the deciding set was never played.
In the only other singles match, senior No. 4 Jacy Smith won her first set, but was trailing freshman
Lafi Joao in the second set when play was stopped.
A 6-0 win in the top doubles match put WCU up from the start as NCCU only had five active players.
NC Central (1-6) will host its third home match in four days when the Eagles entertain Virginia State University on Monday at 1 p.m.
