ITA Honors Women’s Tennis as All-Academic Team, Five Eagles Named Scholar-Athletes

TEMPE, Ariz. – North Carolina Central's women's tennis team was recognized as a 2026 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team, announced Monday.

NCCU was one of 231 Division I programs to earn the distinction. To qualify, a team must have a grade point average of 3.2 or above for the 2025-26 academic year. Each Eagle exceeded that mark individually, including three 4.0 scholars during the year.

Five Eagles also received ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, an award presented to student-athletes who achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the academic year. Valeria San Miguel Soria, Gabriela Mejia Arenas, Valentina de Aquino, Sara Barbaric and Journee Henderson were among the 1,501 student-athletes recognized nationwide.

Women's tennis had spectacular terms in the classroom during both the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters. The team led the way in the Fall with the highest term GPA (3.88) and were among the top three during the Spring for term and cumulative GPA in NCCU's athletic department.
