Eagles Drop MEAC Semifinal Match to Morgan State

CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central women's tennis team concluded its season with a 4-1 loss to top-seeded Morgan State in the MEAC Tennis Championship semifinal on Friday at Cary Tennis Park, finishing the year with a 10-10 overall record.

NCCU was unable to secure the doubles point, as Morgan State carried a 1-0 lead into singles play. Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and Valentina de Aquino earned the Eagles' only doubles win at the No. 3 position.

Valeria San Miguel Soria accounted for NCCU's lone point, earning a straight-sets victory over Morgan State's Julia Jeffrey at No. 2 singles.

After losses at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, the Bears extended their lead to 3-1. The Eagles fought to stay alive, with De Aquino leading 5-4 in the third set of her No. 6 singles match before it was left unfinished. Hidalgo Vega was also ahead 4-1 in the third set at No. 1 singles when play was halted. Freshman Sara Barbaric battled in a third set at No. 5 singles, but Morgan State ultimately clinched the deciding point to advance to the championship final.

NCCU is set to return the majority of its roster next season, with Hidalgo Vega and San Miguel Soria concluding their collegiate careers.
