DURHAM, N.C. – A pair of six-run innings defined the day between North Carolina Central University and Youngstown State, but it was the Penguins who had the final say in an 8-7 win to take the series on Sunday, March 8 at the Durham Athletic Park.
Luis DeLeon (Providence, R.I.) knocked in his 23rd RBI of the season in the bottom of the first to give NCCU (5-11) a 1-0 lead, but YSU (7-6) tied it in the top of the second by way of a solo home run from Steven D'Eusanio (Willoughby, Ohio) who hit his second of the season.
The game stayed deadlocked at 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Eagles sent all nine batters to the plate to strike for six runs to take a 7-1 lead. NCCU loaded the bases before
Alex Sniffen (Wilmington, N.C.) untied the game after lifting a sacrifice fly to centerfield for his first career RBI.
Bryceson Hernandez (Cary, N.C.) hit a two-RBI double down the right field line to add to the lead, and
Tim Fischvogt (Kernersville, N.C.) tacked on an RBI single as well. The frame was punctuated by a two-run home run by
Cameron Norgren (Cary, N.C.) to score the sixth run of the inning.
Dominick Bucko (Saxonburg, Pa.) pulled a run back for the Penguins in the top of the sixth, and then helped his squad complete the comeback in a six-run inning of their own in the top of the seventh.
All six of the runs YSU scored in the top of the seventh were unearned, including the three-run home run from Bucko that gave the Penguins an 8-7 lead. The Eagles were able to get the tying run on board in both the eighth and ninth innings, but Gary Clift Jr. (Brunswick, Ohio) was able to get his second save of the weekend for the Penguins to give them the series victory.
Both Hernandez and Norgren had a team-best two-RBI game for the Eagles, and
Shane Davis (Currituck, N.C.) was saddled with a no decision after tossing six strikeouts over six innings of work.
Bucko knocked in four RBI for the Penguins on two hits, and both D'Eusanio and Phillip Glasser (Tallmadge, Ohio) had a pair of hits as well.
NCCU will play again on Wednesday, March 11 at Longwood before returning for a weekend series with Bryant, beginning on Friday, March 13 at 6:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park.
