Eagles Ride Early Wave to Win over Saint Joseph's

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University posted six runs in the bottom of the second inning against Saint Joseph's and used that to run away with a 12-3 win on Sunday, March 1 at the Durham Athletic Park.

NCCU (4-9) got its first run in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Luis DeLeon (Providence, R.I.), but that was just a prelude to what was to come for the Eagles.  NCCU sent all nine men to the plate in the bottom of the second and scored six to take a 7-0 lead over SJU (5-5).

The two big hits of the frame came on a two-RBI double by DeLeon, and that was followed by a two-run crush to right field from Vinny Bailey (Raleigh, N.C.) for his second home run of the season.  NCCU tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homer from Jordan Varela-Payne (Raleigh, N.C.) and an RBI single by Bailey to give the Eagles a commanding 9-0 lead after the first four frames.

DeLeon knocked another RBI double in the bottom of the fifth after an RBI single from Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) to send the Eagles ahead, 11-1, and that rounded out the big scoring plays for the hosts.

Shane Davis (Currituck, N.C.) had a strong start on the mound as he tossed a season-high six innings, and matched his season-best with eight strikeouts with just two walks as he picked up the win for the Eagles.

Six separate Eagles collected two hits, led by DeLeon with two doubles and four RBI, and Bailey with two hits including the homer and three RBI.  Varela-Payne also had a two hit day with his round-tripper, and recorded two RBI for the Eagles.

NCCU will head back on the road on Wednesday, March 4 at UNC Wilmington.
