DAVIDSON, N.C. – North Carolina Central University pulled level with Davidson early in the contest, but the Wildcats posted a big fourth inning to pull away with a 7-3 win on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Wilson Field.
Davidson (4-0) got on the board first by way of a double from Trevor Candelaria (Durango, Colo.), but NCCU (0-5) was able draw even by way of a solo home run from
Luis DeLeon (Providence, R.I.) in the top of the fourth to knot the game at 1-1.
The Wildcats responded quickly with four runs in the bottom of the fourth frame, stamped by a two-run double by Jacob Hinderleider (Kaneohe, Hawaii) to go in front, 5-1. Davidson added two more runs in the sixth on a single by Garrett Browder (Kenly, N.C.).
NCCU sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the eighth inning, and scored two runs as it took advantage of defensive errors by Davidson, however the Eagles' late push was stopped there.
DeLeon picked up two hits including the home run for the Eagles, and he now has three extra-base hits in the last two games. DeLeon now has a four-game hit streak, while
Michael Alicea (Toa-Alta, Puerto Rico) has recorded a hit now in each of the Eagles' first five games of the season.
NCCU will host Niagara on Friday, Feb. 21 at 6:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park to start a split weekend series with the Purple Eagles and Long Island. Prior to NCCU's game with LIU on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., Niagara will face LIU at noon, also at the Durham Athletic Park.
