Eagles Caught Late by Campbell

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University held a one-run lead heading to the late innings, but Campbell picked up a pair of runs in the sixth on the way to taking a 3-1 win on Wednesday, April 3 at the Durham Athletic Park.

NCCU (12-17) put itself on the board first in the bottom of the second after back-to-back singles to start the frame from Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) and Trey Maslin (Franklin, N.C.), and Williams eventually became the first man to touch home.  NCCU used nine different arms over the course of the game, and held Campbell (18-10) to just one hit over the first five innings.

The Camels broke through in the sixth on a bases loaded walk followed by a sacrifice fly from Zach Minnick (Logan, W.Va.) to give the guests a 2-1 lead.  NCCU was able to bring the tying run to the plate multiple times in the following innings, but Campbell held the Eagles at bay and added an insurance run in the top of the ninth to move ahead, 3-1.

Campbell took an old school approach to the game as Kevin Westlake (Greensboro, N.C.) went six innings before Logan Heintzman (Hamilton, Ohio) pitched the final three to get the save.

Williams finished the game with a pair of hits for the Eagles, and Caleb Coyle (Wake Forest, N.C.) knocked his second double of the season.  Luis Gimenez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) picked up two hits of his own and also swiped two bases for the Camels.

NCCU continues play outside of the MEAC on Friday, April 5 as it starts a weekend series with Davidson on the road.  Game two of the series will be on Saturday, April 6 at 6:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park, and admission is free.
