DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University saw a rare duo performance from
Raasean Davis (Chicago, Ill.) and
Larry McKnight Jr. (North Miami, Fla.) as the two combined to go 13-for-13 from the floor in a 68-59 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, Jan. 5 at McDougald-McLendon Arena.
McKnight went 6-for-6 for 12 points and Davis was 7-for-7 for 16 points as they became the first duo in the Division I era at NCCU to shoot 100% from the floor on at least five field goal attempts.
After falling behind 11-4 early, NCCU (6-9, 1-0 MEAC) went on a 12-0 run to pull ahead of BCU (5-10, 0-1 MEAC) with help from three-pointers from
Reggie Gardner Jr. (Bowie, Md.) and
Jibri Blount (Pittsburgh, Pa.). The first half was tightly contested as both sides went to the break separated by only three points, with NCCU holding a 25-22 advantage.
The start of the second half followed the same trend but the Eagles eventually led by as many as 14, spurred by a 7-0 run that started at the 10:08 mark, featuring a couple of highlight plays from McKnight as he scored eight of his 12 points in the second half. Davis was able to do one better from the field as he went 7-for-7 to accumulate a game-high 16 points along with 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the year. Both Gardner and
Jordan Perkins (Greensboro, N.C.) notched 12 points for the Eagles, and Perkins tacked on a game-high five assists.
Cletrell Pope (Northport, Ala.) took matters into his own hands for BCU as he kept up with his double-double pace with 15 points and a game-high 20 rebounds. Mark Gordon (Eustis, Fla.) followed with 14 points, and Shawntrez Davis (Atlanta, Ga.) put in 10 points for the Wildcats.
The Eagles will now prepare for their first road trip in MEAC play in the 2018-19 season as they'll head to Maryland Eastern Shore and Delaware State on the weekend of Jan. 12.
