Eagles Solve High Point for First Modern Era Victory over Panthers

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University piled up 11 runs in the first three innings to run past High Point University 14-1 on Tuesday, March 29 at the Durham Athletic Park.

With the win, NCCU (13-13) picked up its first win over HPU (18-6) in the modern era after starting 0-4 against the Panthers.  In those four losses the Panthers had outscored the Eagles 35-7, but the Eagles doubled that output in this game.

NCCU jumped all over HPU out of the gate, and sent all nine batters to the plate in the first frame to score four runs.  All of those runs came from four consecutive batters, starting with an RBI double from Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio).

The Eagles struck again in the bottom of the second on a three-run crush from Zachary Marszal (Cary, Ill.) and James Dey (Charlotte, N.C.) kept the momentum rolling in the bottom of the third on a grand slam off of the wall of the warehouse in right-center to give NCCU a commanding 11-0 lead through three innings.

Christian Gonnelli (Lebanon, Conn.) did his job to keep the Panthers off the board as he went seven complete innings and scattered six hits with just one earned run on a solo shot from Luke Parker (Ponte Verde, Fla.).  Gonnelli didn't issue a single walk and fanned a season-high nine batters during his shift.

Thomas Prosero (Batavia, N.Y.) closed the scoring for NCCU in the seventh inning after he cleared the bases with a three-run triple to left-center to lock up the big victory for the Eagles.

Jamar Hinton (Petersburg, Va.) and Landon Fraley (Albemarle, N.C.) came in from the bullpen later in the game, and contributed a strikeout each to reach a staff total of 11 punchouts for the evening.

NCCU closes up its eight-game home stand with a 4-4 record and now heads west to visit Appalachian State University on Wednesday, March 30 before a big three-game series with Florida A&M beginning on Saturday, April 2.
