BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University got revenge for its defeat in Durham earlier this season with a 12-1 win over North Carolina Central University on Wednesday, March 30 at Jim & Bettie Smith Stadium.
After NCCU (13-14) put up 11 runs in the first three innings against High Point, App State (6-19) flipped the script on the Eagles and scored in each of the first five innings to take a big 12-0 lead.
The biggest inning for the Mountaineers came in the fourth, where they batted around for five runs on four hits, including a two-RBI double from Matt Vernon that started the scoring in the frame. Vernon had a strong day at the plate for App State as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and three RBI.
The Eagles got their first run on the board in the sixth inning after
James Dey (Charlotte, N.C.) was driven in on a sacrifice fly from
Zachary Marszal (Cary, Ill.), but that was the only time NCCU got on the scoreboard.
Dey and
Justice Sampson (Lumberton, N.C.) came in from the bullpen and combined to keep App State off the board for the final three innings. Dey went two complete innings without allowing a hit with one walk and two strikeouts, and Sampson gave up just one hit and a walk.
The Eagles will rest up to head south to Florida A&M University for a critical Southern Division series beginning with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2. All games of the weekend series will be carried live on the NCCU Sports Network available at NCCUEaglePride.com, and live Twitter updates can be found by following @NCCUAthletics.
