Florida A&M Wins Battle for First Place over NCCU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – North Carolina Central University entered its series with Florida A&M University with an opportunity to take sole possession of first place of the Southern Division of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, but the Rattlers had other plans as they took the doubleheader, 6-3 and 16-4 on Saturday, April 2 at Moore-Kittles Field.

In game one NCCU (13-16, 5-6 MEAC) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning with one run coming through by an RBI single from Ellington Hopkins (Lansing, N.Y.).  FAMU (17-9, 7-1 MEAC) halved the lead in the fourth inning with a runner coming home on a double play, but Jacobi Harris (Pittsboro, N.C.) stretched the advantage back to two in the top of the eighth by coming all the way home from first on a throwing error.

The Rattlers fought back to tie the contest on a two-RBI triple from Willis McDaniel (Tallahassee, Fla.) and then added three more runs to take a 6-3 lead to the ninth frame after trailing by two runs.  NCCU was able to load the bases and get the go-ahead run to the plate, however the Eagles left the bases full to end the game.

Game two started with a bang for FAMU after MEAC batting leader Alec Wong (Rockledge, Fla.) slapped a solo home run to right field as the second man up.  The Rattlers took a 2-0 lead after the second inning to reverse the course of the first game, and the Eagles knotted the game in the top of the third on a pair of RBI groundouts.

The two sides traded runs over the next two halves of an inning, and the Eagles were able to level the game at three runs apiece going to the bottom of the fourth.  The Rattlers then took over the game and batted around in both the fourth and fifth inning to score nine and four runs in those frames, respectively.

Hopkins got a run back for NCCU in the top of the seventh inning on a solo crank to right field, and that ended the scoring for the afternoon.  Hopkins had the best day at the plate for NCCU over both games, as he went 4-for-8 with three RBI and two runs scored along with the home run.

NCCU will finish the series with FAMU on Sunday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m., and the game will be carried live on the NCCU Sports Network available at NCCUEaglePride.com.  Live Twitter updates will also be available by following @NCCUAthletics.
