DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University will play the final game of its eight-game home stand against High Point University on Tuesday, March 29 before heading west to Appalachian State University on Wednesday, March 30 to tune up for a pivotal series with Florida A&M University this upcoming weekend.
NCCU (12-13, 5-3 MEAC) was originally scheduled to travel to HPU (18-5, 5-0 Big South) on Feb. 23, but that game was postponed due to rain. The Eagles pay a visit to App State (5-19, 1-8 Sun Belt) after NCCU picked up a 4-1 victory on March 1.
NCCU is paced at the plate by senior
James Dey (Charlotte, N.C.) who has a team-best .386 batting average along with four doubles and three homers, including a late two-run go-ahead shot against Savannah State University to give NCCU a 2-1 win on Friday, March 25.
Dey has racked up 22 hits and 11 RBI and carries a .614 slugging percentage which is third on the squad behind
Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio) with a .706 and
Conrad Kovalcik (Detroit, Mich.) at .639.
HPU has started its conference run with a 5-0 mark before finally dropping a game against Winthrop on Saturday, March 26. The Panthers are currently second in the Big South standings behind Liberty University who is 3-0 in the league.
The Panthers have hit a total of five home runs as a team, and Carson Jackson (Melbourne, Fla.) has lifted three of them. He has tallied a total of 12 extra base hits with six doubles and three triples, and leads the squad with 22 RBI. Jackson is hitting .357 at the plate and holds a strong .571 slugging percentage.
NCCU defeated App State 4-1 earlier this season in a power fest that saw all runs come home on homers. Ortiz and
Zachary Marszal (Cary, Ill.) both hit solo blasts, and
Thomas Prospero (Batavia, N.Y.) secured the win with a two-run comet.
Tanner Mann-Fix (Charlotte, N.C.) hit a long fly ball that resulted in the lone run for the Mountaineers in that game, and he continues to lead his crew with a .299 average, and he is tied for the team-lead with eight extra base hits on three doubles, three triples and two homers.
First pitch for the game against High Point is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park, and admission to the game is free.
