DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – In their regular season home-opening match, the Eagles of North Carolina Central University fell in three straight sets to the Wildcats of Davidson College (25-16, 25-17, 25-22) on Tuesday, Aug. 30 in the McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
While the offense did not flow as productively as desired, the Eagles boasted their second best blocking game with seven team blocks in the match.
NCCU sophomore Kalin Russell led the mighty maroon with three solo blocks and two block assists.
Maroon and gray newcomer Ashley McCarthy led the hitting campaign with six kills on the night, while setter turned right side hitter sophomore Jzima-Malaki Kalao assisted in the offensive regime with five kills. Freshman Dayanna Arrufat and Russell finished with four kills apiece.
NCCU freshman Alice Genna distributed 17 assists, along with digging nine Wildcat hits.
Collectively, the Eagles amassed 23 kills, 20 assists, 32 digs and seven blocks.
Davidson’s offensive flow ruffled the Eagles’ feathers and proved to be the determining factor of the match. Five Wildcats hit over 40 percent and two student-athletes hit in double-figures. Sophomore duo Carolina Brown and Tindall Sewell boasted 11 and 10 kills, respectively to pace the offense.
Wildcat junior Ariel Ley, circulated 32 assists to fuel the visiting offense, while upperclassmen Molly Crenshaw and Christine Perzinski dominated the defense, collecting 13 and 15 digs, respectively.
The visiting SoCon squad concluded the match with 44 kills, 36 assists, 47 digs and two team blocks.
NCCU drops to 0-5 on the season, while Davidson advances to 3-1.
The Eagles look to snap their five-match losing streak with the Georgetown Tournament on Sept. 2-3 in Washington, D.C. NCCU will battle Central Connecticut, George Washington and UNC Wilmington during the two-day event.
