Arrufat seizes her first double-double and McCarthy leads in blocks

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – Freshmen Dayanna Arufat and Ashley McCarthy provided notable performances in North Carolina Central University’s four-set (25-19, 17-25, 25-22, 25-12) loss to the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, Oct. 8 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Arrufat paced the Eagles in kills with 10, while collecting 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.  While McCarthy collected four block assists and one solo block.  Fellow freshman Alice Genna delivered 18 assists.  Senior Raven King led the team in digs with 12, as senior Tasha-Gaye Richards served three aces.

The mighty maroon amassed 39 kills on 121 attempts, 36 assists, six service aces, 41 digs and nine team blocks.
Janeen Davis and Krysta Gardner paced the Wildcats offense.  Davis topped the squad with 20 kills, as Gardner followed with 17.  Frances Rodriguez circulated 30 assists, while Davis collected 16 digs.  Along with Linda Nwabuko leading in blocks (four) and service aces (three).

The Lady Wildcats took set one with a score of 25-19.  The Eagles began the set with a small one-point lead in the early rallies of the set.  The two teams even tied on 7 occasions.  But Bethune-Cookman would pass the Eagles, outscoring the visiting North Carolina squad 17-11 run at the 8-8 mark pacing to take the opening set win.

Richards led the maroon and gray with three kills in the set, which were the first three kills of the set for the Eagles.  McCarthy and sophomore Kalin Russell added two kills to the set. 

NCCU took set two of the match off a 7-1 run in the final rallies of play for a 25-17 win.

The set was thrilling, with the Eagles and Wildcats battling through 11 ties and three lead changes.  The mighty maroon surpassed B-CU by out hitting the host squad 70 percent to 47 percent and putting away 11 kills on 22 attempts with only two errors.  Arrufat stepped up on the left side of the court with four kills on five attempts and not a single error.

Following the standard 10-minute intermission, the Wildcats returned to the court with vengeance, seizing a set three 25-22 win.

NCCU lost a bit of steam from its set two win, tying with B-CU three times and only taking the lead once.

While Arrufat continued to lead the Eagles in kills with three, NCCU’s eight kills and eight errors hindered their ability to seize the final three points for the win.

Bethune-Cookman took set four and the match win with a score 25-12.  The Wildcats seized the win hitting 84 percent. 

Senior Emanuelle Santos led the Eagles with three kills in the final set, despite the maroon and gray not seizing a single block.

Saturday’s match marks NCCU’s first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play loss this season.

NCCU drops to 1-19 on the season and 1-1 in the MEAC, while Bethune-Cookman advance to 9-10 and 3-1 in the MEAC.

The mighty maroon continues their play in the Sunshine State with a 7:00 p.m. contest against Florida A&M on Monday, Oct. 10 in Tallahassee, Fla.
