Eagles' costly game errors result in loss of competition

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks proved to be too much for the North Carolina Central University Eagles, pushing to a 3-0 victory in the Battle of the Birds Saturday afternoon in the W.P. Hytche Center on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. UMES took the win by scores of 25-9, 25-18 and 25-15.

With the victory, UMES improves to 22-6 overall and sweeps the season series with NCCU. The Lady Hawks won 3-0 back on October 4th in Hampton, Va.

The Lady Hawks' tough defense held the Eagles to a below zero hitting percentage, allowing only 18 kills and forcing 19 errors. Leading the offense for the Eagles was senior Avaniki Campbell with five kills for the competition, followed by Belinda Behncke-Biney with four and Tasha-Gaye Richards with three, hitting a .500.

Sophomore Kiara Brown led the team with 16 assists. Behind the service line, the Eagles passed four service errors while earning one service ace from sophomore Raven King.

The Lady Eagles now hold a record of 8-23.

Next up for the Eagles will be Senior Night versus North Carolina A&T State University on Monday, November 16 at 7pm in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

Two seniors will be suiting up for their last collegiate competition on Monday evening. NCCU will salute seniors Avaniki Campbell and Aqiyla on their achievements in Eagle volleyball.
