WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The North Carolina Central women's golf team keeps getting better each season.
Two years ago, the Eagles placed ninth in their first appearance in the Northeast Conference Championship. Last year, NCCU finished eighth.
This year, NCCU was expected to be much improved. The Eagles were picked fifth in the preseason coaches' poll.
But the Eagles even surpassed their peers' expectations. Led by
Trinity Ahing, the Eagles overcame rainy weather on Friday and a long day of two rounds of golf on Saturday to place fourth out 12 teams on Sunday.
Their three-day score of 980 on the par 72, 6,083-yard Kingsmill Resort Plantation course was only three stokes behind third-place Saint Francis (977). Fairleigh Dickinson outlasted Howard in a tight battle for the team title by one stroke (927-928).
For the second straight year, Ahing placed in the top 10 individually to make the All-Tournament team. The senior golfer shot a three-day total of 237 to tie for eighth with two other golfers. Last year, Ahing tied for sixth.
Ahing was one of four Eagles who finished among the top 35 golfers.
Sidney Renville tied for 18
th with a score of 244,
Aubree Clements tied for 31
st with a 255 score and
Cailynn Winford tied for 34
th with a 257 score.
Sixty-one golfers competed in the championship tournament. Paris Fieldings of Howard was the individual champion with a 227 score.
