WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – North Carolina Central freshman
Sanaa Carter emerged from a tight three-day battle to claim second place in the women's team division of the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship at The Park at West Palm course on Wednesday. It is the event's highest finish by an NCCU women's golfer in the Division I era.
Former NCCU golfer Natasha Ainsley-Thomas previously held that distinction before Carter's performance. She finished 5
th in the event in 2022.
Carter was in contention on the final day after leading through two rounds on the par 71, 5,806-yard three-day tournament. Her final score of 224 was two strokes ahead of Tori Mouton and Ekaterina Prokhorova of North Carolina A&T and Kierra Williams of Alabama in the 30-player field as the trio tied for third at 226. The NCCU golfer was just one stroke behind individual medalist Thaiz Amezcua of Texas Southern, who posted a score of 223.
Carter and
Sidney Renville of NCCU both placed in the upper half of the individual standings. Renville tied for 15
th with a score of 240.
In the team standings, NCCU tied Chicago State for fourth with a score of 940. The Eagles were one stroke away from tying for third place in the six-team field.
The PGA WORKS capped the Eagles' most successful season since they first competed as a team in the 2021-22 season. Prior to this week, Carter was named to the All-NEC and NEC All-Tournament teams after recording a sixth-place finish in the conference tournament. Carter,
