NORFOLK, Va. – The North Carolina Central University tennis programs swept the weekly Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference awards announced on Thursday. Juniors Kareem Abdul Hakim and Alejandra Hidalgo Vega won the Men's and Women's Player of the Week honors, respectively. Freshman Mariana Zottoli joined the duo named Women's Rookie of the Week. This is the second week in a row that Hidalgo Vega and Zottoli have garnered this recognition.

Abdul Hakim (Jakarta, Indonesia) stepped up in No.1 Singles helping the Eagles go 2-1 last week with his victories over Belmont Abbey College and Davidson College. He also teamed up with senior Oliver Saarinen for a 6-0 triumph in No.2 Doubles over BAC as the pair is now 4-2 on the season.

Hidalgo Vega (Madrid, Spain) has started the spring season 3-1 in the No.1 Singles slot as NC Central earned its first wins in a home doubleheader against Winston-Salem State University and Chowan University on Feb. 8. In No.1 Doubles, Hidalgo Vega went 2-0 with Valeria San Miguel Soria.   

Zottoli (Tucuman, Argentina) defeated her WSSU opponent in a pair of 6-0 sets followed by two 6-1 sets over Chowan. The freshman has won three straight at the No.3 position as well as in No.2 Doubles with Patricia Palencia.

Weather altered the scheduled matches this week. The next match for women's tennis will be on Feb. 20 at noon against Furman at the Cary Tennis Park. Men's tennis travels to UNC Asheville on Feb. 21 for a 1 p.m. match.
