Ahing Leads Women’s Golf in Season Opener at Elon

ELON, N.C. Senior Trinity Ahing led the North Carolina Central University women's golf team on Monday in the Elon Phoenix Invitational, ending up in a three-way tie for third after 36 holes at the Alamance Country Club.

Tuesday's third round was called off due to weather.

Ahing went 70-74 in Monday's two rounds, shooting 144 overall on the par-71 course. Her first-round 70 is her best in maroon and gray, besting the 71 she shot at the NEC Women's Championship last season.

Sophomore Josafina Rendo was tied for sixth after two rounds, going 75-72 to shoot a combined 147. Sidney Renville was tied for 19th at 151 (73-78), and freshman Mya Smith shot 158 (81-77) to tie for 55th.

Junior Aubree Clements (68th, 79-83=162) and sophomore Cailynn Winford (70th, 78-86=164) also competed for the Eagles.

The team standings after two rounds saw N.C. Central sitting fifth out of 14 teams at 597 (296-301), just six strokes out of the lead. Charleston Southern led the team leaderboard at 591 (285-306).

North Carolina A&T's Ekaterina Prokhorova was the top individual at 138 (67-71).

The men's golf team was scheduled to open the 2024-25 campaign in the Fall Wolfpack Invitational earlier this week, but inclement weather forced N.C. State to postpone. A makeup date has not been announced.

The Eagles will return to action on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 23-24, when they head to Stone Mountain, Ga., to compete in the 39th annual Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. HBCU Golf Classic.
