NCCU Softball Begins MEAC Title Defense on May 8

2024 MEAC Softball Championship Bracket Unveiled

NORFOLK, Va. – The field is set, and defending champion North Carolina Central University will try and repeat as the Eagles enter postseason play as the fourth seed at the 2024 MEAC Softball Championship that will be hosted by Norfolk State University on Wednesday-Saturday, May 8-11 as officially released by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference office.

After a week of prep NCCU will quickly hit the diamond in its attempt to defend the crown as the Eagles will be involved in the first game of the four-day event, playing fifth-seeded South Carolina State University on Wednesday, May 8 at 9 a.m.

The Eagles won their season series against the Bulldogs, 2-1, to finish the regular season with three consecutive league series triumphs. NCCU has an 18-34 record on the season while sporting a 14-7 mark in conference clashes. SC State returns to tournament play for the first time since 2011 after going 8-13 in conference action.

The winner of the NCCU/SCSU game will have to play a second game on day one, playing top-seeded Morgan State University at 3 p.m., while the loser of that same NCCU/SCSU game will need to make a run out of the loser's bracket of the double-elimination event, playing the first elimination game on Thursday, May 9 at 3 p.m.

Morgan State clinched the regular season championship title after completing the 2024 MEAC conference schedule with an 18-3 conference record while going 30-17 overall. This marks the fourth consecutive season that the Bears have claimed the regular season title and the second time in three years that MSU has recorded 18 conference wins.

Finishing runner-up in the standings to secure the No. 2 seed in the MEAC Softball Championship Tournament is Howard University. The Bison recorded their second 30-win season in the last three years, collecting a 32-11 record while going 16-5 in conference play to highlight the other half of the bracket.

Coppin State finished the season with a .500 record (20-20), including 15 wins coming against conference opponents to secure the third seed. CSU will play sixth-seeded University of Maryland Eastern Shore in the second game of the championship and Howard will be the last team to begin play when the Bison play the winner of that CSU/UMES game in the nightcap of the first day of competition.
