COVINGTON, Ga. – Elana Krupey hurled a two-hitter and North Carolina Central scored early in a 5-3 softball victory over Fort Valley State on the second day of the HBCU Collegiate Invitational at Turner Lake Complex on Saturday. In the nightcap,
Cameron Frye was 2 of 3 with two RBIs and one run scored in a 9-4 loss to Florida A&M.
NCCU-FORT VALLEY STATE
The Eagles set the tone with four runs in the first inning. The lead was 5-1 heading into the seventh, thanks to Krupey. She left the game in the bottom of the seventh but returned after Fort Valley State scored two runs on a triple with one out. Krupey recorded two strikeouts to secure the win.
Krupey, who gained her first pitching win, also contributed on offense. She drove in
Daiyah Bailey on a groundout for a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Kendal Daniels followed with a two-run rightfield double, scoring
Tyler Suttles and
Izabella Chavez and later scored on Frye's single for a 4-0 lead.
The Wildcats (1-4) scored a run in the third inning but the Eagles extend the margin to 5-1 on a bases-loaded walk to Daniels in the fifth that scored Krupey. Fort Valley State scored twice in the seventh inning before Krupey shut the door on the Wildcats' rally.
NCCU-FLORIDA A&M
The Eagles (1-8) led twice in a see-saw battle before Florida A&M broke the game open late.
Frye gave NCCU a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with a centerfield single that scored
Mia De La Fuente. After Florida A&M took a 3-1 lead, she doubled to centerfield in the sixth inning that scored Daniels and started a rally.
Hannah McGonigle drove in Frye with a centerfield single and McGonigle later scored on an infield error to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead. Florida A&M (5-4) responded with six runs on four home runs in the bottom half of the sixth.
De La Fuente batted 2 of 4 with a double and one run scored and Daniels finished 1 of 2 with one run scored for the Eagles, who had a season-high eight hits.
