PRATTVILLE, Ala. – Freshman
Sidney Renville and junior
Jalea Culliver both finished in the upper half of the field to tally the best individual finishes for the North Carolina Central University women's golf team at the ASU Spring Invitational hosted by Alabama State University at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capitol Hill on Sunday-Monday, Feb. 19-20.
Renville fired NCCU's lowest tournament total for an event that was shortened from 54 to 45 holes. Renville placed in a two-way tie for 11th place out of 40 golfers with her 28-over par total of 208. Culliver finished four strokes behind Renville in a three-way tie for 16th place.
Renville, who is from Cary, North Carolina, signed for NCCU's lowest scorecard of the first round with an 81 on the 6,033-yard, par-72 Senator Course layout at the RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill. Culliver, a resident of Omaha, Nebraska, shot that same number in a second round that was suspended late Sunday due to darkness and resumed and completed on Monday.
Due to the delays, the third round was shortened from 18 holes to nine holes. Renville once again had NCCU's best score with a four-over 40 on the last nine that measured 2,986 yards while Culliver took just one more swing.
With her 11th place result, Renville (81-83-40—204) was NCCU's top finisher for the first time in her rookie campaign. Culliver (86-81-41—208) has now finished in the upper half of the field in all five tournaments she has represented the maroon and gray in her first season at NCCU with her 16th place finish on Monday.
As a team, the Eagles finished in seventh place out of eight teams, picking up a win against University of Maryland Eastern Shore and was just one shot behind sixth-place Savannah State University.
After being tied after two rounds, Samford University beat Sacred Heart University by five shots in the shortened third round to secure the team title with a five-over par team total of 771. The victorious Bulldogs were led by tournament medalist Christian Williams, who shot a six-over par total of 75-73-38—186.
NC Central will next tee it up in the Starks Invitational hosted by Tennessee State University at GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee, on Monday-Tuesday, March 6-7.
